Malaysia Prison Museum

The Malaysia Prison Museum is located within the former Peringgit Prison in Melaka. Built in 1860, it is the second-oldest prison in Malaysia and holds significant historical value.

From 1964 until June 1990, the building was used as the second branch of the Henry Gurney School, a rehabilitation institution for juvenile offenders. It was later upgraded and officially known as Peringgit Prison, continuing its operation until 2010.

On 27 January of the same year, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved the conversion of the prison into a museum. By 21 May, the final group of 143 inmates was transferred to the newly built Sungai Udang Prison, marking the end of its function as an active correctional facility.

Today, the Malacca Prison Museum showcases a wide range of exhibits that offer insight into Malaysia’s prison history. These include original prison cells, temporary detention rooms, a whipping area, the gallows, inmate admission record books, punishment devices, various types of prisoner uniforms, official attire, archival photographs related to punishments, and artefacts from prisons across different states in Malaysia that no longer exist.

Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum

Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum is located at the foothill of St. Paul’s Hill in Malacca and was once a royal residence of the Malacca Sultanate. Despite the passage of time, the palace has been well preserved and continues to reflect the elegance of traditional Malay architecture.

Although the design is relatively simple, the palace features beautifully hand-carved furniture and decorative details. A graceful fountain adds to the overall atmosphere, creating a sense of calm and serenity that many visitors find peaceful and soothing.

The palace consists of three storeys and is entirely constructed from wood, without any iron nails. Inside, the furnishings and ornaments are intricately carved, and each section of the palace follows a different theme. These themes highlight the historical origins of the Malacca Sultanate, its political system, royal court etiquette, and diplomatic relations.

The Stadthuys

The Stadthuys in Melaka, commonly known as the Red House, was built by the Dutch starting in 1650 and once served as an administrative office during the Dutch colonial period. It is considered the oldest surviving Dutch building in the Far East and remains one of Melaka’s most critical historical landmarks.

The distinctive red bricks used in the construction were specially shipped from the Netherlands by the Dutch colonial government at the time. The building was originally a church before being converted into the town hall. Today, it houses the Stadthuys Museum, which showcases Melaka’s rich history.

Located just behind the museum is Christ Church Melaka. Visitors can conveniently walk over to the church after exploring the Stadthuys, making it easy to visit both historical sites in one stop.

Church of Saint Paul, Malacca

The Church of Saint Paul is located on a historic hill in Melaka and was initially built by the Portuguese in 1521. The church began as a wooden structure, then was rebuilt in brick and stone during the 1590s.

Today, the weathered exterior walls still bear visible bullet marks, serving as a reminder of the church’s long and eventful history. In later years, the site was used as a burial ground for Dutch nobles, and tombstones inscribed in Latin and Portuguese can still be seen.

Inside the church, stone plaques with Portuguese inscriptions line both sides of the interior. From the hilltop where the church stands, visitors can also enjoy a clear view of the Malacca Strait, making it both a historical and scenic spot in Melaka.

Jonker Street

Jonker Street is now a must-visit destination in Melaka and becomes especially lively on weekends, when the area is filled with crowds and energy. It is one of the most vibrant streets in the city and a key highlight of Melaka’s old town.

Located in the historic district, Jonker Street has been developed by the state government into a tourism area that focuses on promoting Chinese culture. Along the street, visitors can often spot street performers adding to the lively atmosphere. One of the more unique sights here is the presence of fortune tellers, who offer readings for visitors curious about their luck and future.

The old street is lined with traditional shops selling a wide variety of local snacks and handmade treats. Many beautifully preserved century-old buildings stand alongside colourful modern wall murals, creating a charming blend of heritage and contemporary art.

Every Friday to Sunday evening, Jonker Street transforms into a night market. Stalls line the street, selling local street food, handicrafts, and Melaka specialties, making it one of the best places to experience the city’s local culture and flavours.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in Melaka is a beautifully preserved temple recognised internationally as a cultural heritage site. One of its most striking features is the polished pillars and the intricate carvings on the beams, highlighted with gold leaf, which reflect the craftsmanship of traditional Chinese architecture.

Often described as a “living museum”, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple continues to function as an active place of worship. Visitors can take part in various traditional practices such as offering oil, drawing fortune sticks, chanting prayers, performing rituals to ward off bad luck, paying respects to Wen Chang for academic success, or seeking blessings for relationships.

Today, the temple remains a popular spot for both visitors and residents. It is a place where people can slow down, appreciate the traces of history, and gain a deeper understanding of Melaka’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

The Shore Sky Tower is the tallest building in Melaka city centre and offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of this historic city and its surrounding areas. From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Melaka city, the Malacca Strait, Pulau Besar, and, on a clear day, Gunung Ledang.

For those seeking a thrill, the tower also features a glass-bottomed ledge along its side, allowing visitors to experience the dizzying sensation of viewing the city from a breathtaking height.

In the evening, the Shore Sky Tower is an excellent place to catch one of Melaka’s most beautiful sunsets, as the city slowly comes alive under the glow of its evening lights. Located on the 43rd floor, the open-air observation deck offers unobstructed views, while the Sky Deck’s glass floor provides a unique perspective of Melaka city, the Malacca Strait, Pulau Besar, and nearby islands.

Nancy's Kitchen

I have always had a deep appreciation for Nyonya food. Something is comforting about the flavors, as if every dish has been lovingly prepared by a grandmother in the kitchen with care and patience. Nyonya kuih, in particular, is highly popular and loved by many.

Nyonya cuisine stands out as one of Malacca’s most distinctive local food cultures, and Nancy’s Kitchen is a well-established name often associated with it. The restaurant is usually bustling, especially during peak hours, as both locals and visitors come to enjoy traditional dishes that blend Malay and Chinese flavors and are cherished by both communities.

The newer outlet has two stories and attracts a large number of diners. If you do not have a reservation, it’s best to arrive early to avoid waiting. One highly recommended dish is the Chicken Candlenut. Candlenut, known locally as buah keras, adds a rich and nutty depth to the dish. The texture is somewhat similar to rendang, though it has less coconut milk. It pairs beautifully with rice and is truly delicious.

Ah Ma Ho Liao

Located near Jonker Street in Melaka, Ah Ma Ho Liao is a charming breakfast spot tucked away in a quiet old alley. Hidden from the main road, it has become a must-visit place for those who enjoy local-style breakfasts with a nostalgic touch.

Ah Ma Ho Liao is best known for its signature Tiger Bites Lion, a unique local favourite that many visitors are curious to try. Another must-order item is their grilled toast. Freshly toasted and served hot, the bread is paired with sweet kaya and melting salted butter, making it a simple yet satisfying treat.

The menu also offers a wide variety of local delights that are enough to make anyone hungry just by looking at them. If you are visiting Melaka, be sure not miss this old-school gem. It is a lovely place to enjoy a relaxed breakfast and share good food with friends while soaking in the atmosphere of the old town.

Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum

Along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, a row of 19th-century shophouses and historic buildings houses the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum. Officially opened to the public in 1985, the museum has become one of the most significant places to learn about Peranakan culture in Melaka.

The interior design showcases a blend of multicultural influences and provides a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of wealthy Baba Nyonya families from the past. The atmosphere is both grand and elegant, while still retaining traces of history, allowing visitors to appreciate its splendor and heritage.

As you walk through the museum, it’s easy to imagine the lives of prominent Peranakan families. Many of the furnishings are intricately carved, featuring a striking mix of Chinese, Victorian, and Dutch design elements. This unique combination highlights the fusion of Chinese traditions with British Victorian and Dutch colonial influences, making the museum a captivating representation of Melaka’s multicultural history.

The Maritime Museum in Melaka is housed within a full-scale replica of an ancient Spanish sailing ship, and its unique design immediately captures visitors’ attention. The boat itself is a popular attraction, offering a distinctive way to explore Melaka’s rich maritime history.

Inside the ship’s cabins, the museum displays a collection of historical artifacts related to Melaka, making it a crucial symbol of the city’s heritage. The exhibits emphasize the significance of Melaka’s political control in establishing its maritime dominance in the region, as well as the city’s trading relationships from its early beginnings through the colonial period and into the era of independence.

Malacca Submarine Museum

The Malacca Submarine Museum is built from a retired submarine that has been converted into a unique exhibition space, making it one of Melaka’s more interesting attractions. Inside, visitors can see naval memorabilia and warship equipment from the era before computers were widely used.

For those who have never seen a submarine up close, this visit can feel quite impressive, especially if it is your first time standing next to a real submarine or military aircraft. Visitors are allowed to walk inside the submarine and explore its interior, where scenes of the sailors’ daily life are still on display. You can see areas such as the crew’s sleeping quarters, toilet, and kitchen. The spaces are tiny, which really gives you a sense of how cramped life was onboard.

After exploring the submarine museum, visitors can also spend some time in the nearby area. There are options for horse riding or taking a short horse carriage ride, making it a pleasant stop to include when planning things to do in Melaka.

Malacca Straits Mosque

The Melaka Straits Mosque is located on an artificial island off Melaka’s coast and is one of the city’s most scenic landmarks. Before entering the mosque, visitors are required to respect local customs. Short skirts, shorts, and sleeveless tops are not permitted, but clothing rentals are available at the entrance.

At sunset, the atmosphere around the mosque is particularly enchanting. The melodious recitation of the Quran fills the air, and the warm sunset softly illuminates the mosque’s golden dome, reflecting on the shimmering Straits of Malacca, creating a tranquil and unforgettable scene.

After nightfall, decorative lights illuminate the mosque’s exterior, giving it a completely different look. Bathed in light and moonlight, the Straits Mosque of Malacca appears even more elegant and captivating, becoming a popular destination for nighttime visitors.
